Sampling Time

Sampling Time

Sampling time is a crucial concept in temperature measurement using sensors like pyrometers and bolometers. Unlike sampling frequency, which describes how often samples are taken per unit time, sampling time refers to the interval between individual data points. Optris temperature sensors offer two modes for sampling data points: burst mode and polling.

Burst Mode: In burst mode, users define the sampling time, and the device automatically captures data at this interval. This mode excels in high-speed data acquisition, capable of sampling times as short as 1 ms. Data is delivered in packets — ”the so-called “bursts” — containing a predefined set of device-specific data, making it ideal for applications requiring rapid data collection.

Polling Mode: Polling mode offers users more control, allowing them to request data points manually. The sampling time here depends on the interval (Δt) between these requests. While this mode is constrained by the user’s software and the device’s response capabilities, it can achieve a minimum sampling time of 20 ms. Polling mode is suitable for applications with limited performance capabilities for data processing, allowing the user to sample data when the application has capacity.

Both modes ensure our sensors deliver accurate and reliable temperature data, catering to a variety of industrial and scientific applications. Whether you need fast, continuous data streams or controlled intermittent readings, our devices provide the flexibility and performance required for optimal temperature measurement.
