Product Description

The Optris CSmicro 3M pyrometer is meticulously engineered to precisely measure temperatures ranging from 50 °C to 600 °C (122 °F to 1112 °F), specializing in accurately gauging metal temperatures with its 2.3 µm spectral range. Its compact infrared measuring head allows for effortless installation in confined spaces, facilitating seamless mechanical integration. This thermal non-contact sensor delivers reliable performance and finds frequent use in hot metal applications such as steel, tungsten, iron, nickel, brass, and composites.

With an impressive distance-to-spot size ratio of up to 33:1, the CSmicro 3M ensures precise temperature measurements even from a distance, making this pyrometer ideal for integration into machinery, particularly in manufacturing environments. Its compact size and temperature resistance of up to 85 °C (185 °F) further enhance its suitability for industrial settings. CSmicro 3M sensors boast a rapid response time of as low as 8 ms, ensuring swift and accurate temperature readings.

In laboratory environments, precise temperature measurements are essential, particularly when utilizing pyrometers. However, industrial settings pose unique challenges that can impact temperature accuracy. Optris advocates for the use of short-wavelength or mid-range pyrometers due to their resilience against emissivity variation and superior optical resolution, ensuring consistent performance across diverse real-world conditions. Engineers must carefully consider factors such as wavelength selection, calibration accuracy, optics quality, and temperature range to mitigate potential errors arising from optical limitations, emissivity changes, reflections, and misalignment.

The CSmicro 3M series offers versatility with various versions featuring different optics, distance-to-spot size ratios, maximal head temperatures, and output types, including analog outputs like 4-20 mA, 0-5 V, or 0-10 V voltage output. It also supports digital alarms and serial communication over RS232, facilitating seamless integration into control systems. Additionally, CSmicro 3M series with mA output supports two-wire-output operation, adjusting the electrical current in the ground loop line based on the measured temperature. Various lens options with close-focus or standard-focus optics cater to different measurement requirements.

Engineered to withstand demanding conditions, the CSmicro 3M ensures accurate temperature measurement even in harsh environments. Its thermal shock-resistant design ensures consistency despite ambient temperature changes. The robust stainless steel measuring head with an M12x1 thread allows easy integration into confined hot spaces, enhancing its adaptability for various applications.

Equipped with an intelligent LED display offering functions such as alarm signaling, target support, self-diagnosis, or temperature-code display, the CSmicro 3M provides enhanced usability. Placing electronic components within the cable ensures high-temperature resistance of the measuring head.

Complementing the CSmicro 3M pyrometer are Optris accessories like air purging systems, mounting flanges, and close-focus optics, facilitating temperature measurements of small spot-size targets from close distances. Additionally, the optional USB kit and Compact Connect software simplify configuration, fine-tuning settings, and sensor setup, enabling convenient recording of temperature measurements over time. The Optris IR mobile app, available for download from Google Play, further streamlines commissioning and provides a platform to display temperature measurements and changes over time. These pyrometers are designed and manufactured in Germany, carefully calibrated to government standards such as PTB or NIST. For large-quantity OEM customers, customization options, such as different cable sizes, are available. As with all Optris products, application engineers are on hand to discuss industrial applications and provide after-sales support.

    FAQs

How can I change the scaling, emissivity, or other settings?

The Optris CS kit (ACCSMIAC) and the software CompactConnect must be used to change the pyrometers settings.

Can I set up the CSmicro 3M pyrometer for digital communication?

The optional USB programming kit is required for digital communication. Using the terminal block, connect each wire of the USB adapter cable with the same colored wire of the sensor cable. The sensor offers bidirectional and unidirectional digital communication. Bidirectional communication allows for the sending and receiving of data between the sensor and a computer. Unidirectional communication supports a fast burst mode of data in which the sensor only sends data.

Does the CSmicro 3M support an RS232 communication?

Yes, for a bidirectional RS232 connection of the sensor, an additional interface board (recommended MAX3381E) is needed. MAX3381E

Does the CSmicro 3M support an open collector output?

Yes, an additional open collector output is supported. The open collector output is an additional alarm output on the CSmicro 3M. In addition, the simultaneous analog output is an open collector output and can trigger an external relay, for example. In the case of long wires, there might be a voltage drop at the ground wire, and the mV output is distorted. The brown wire can be used as a ground supply, and the thermocouple wire can be used as a ground.

Can I connect the CSmicro 3M to a smartphone to adjust the settings?

The CSmicro 3M sensor can connect directly to an Android smartphone or tablet. The IR mobile application monitors and analyses infrared temperature measurements on a connected Android smartphone or tablet. The phone powers the CSmicro 3M pyrometer.

When can I use the CSmicro 3M after powering?

The CSmicro 3M has a warm-up time. At a supply voltage (Vcc) ≥ 12 V, the sensor takes about 5 minutes to work in a stable mode. Therefore, the LED will show an alarm state for up to 5 minutes after switching on the unit.

How far can I position the CSmicro 3M from the target?

The measuring object’s size and the infrared thermometers optical resolution determine the maximum distance between the sensing head and the measuring object. The object should fill out the optics’ field of view to prevent measuring deviations. Consequently, the spot should always be at least the same size as the object or smaller. The spot size refers to 90% of the radiation energy.

Which changes have to be selected if a close-focus lens is used?

The optional CF lens allows the measurement of small objects. If the CF lens is used, the transmission has to be set to 0.92. The optional USB kit (including software) must change this value. The assigned transmission (average value) is a characteristic value that may have a certain scattering. If required, the transmission has to be determined experimentally.

What is the function of the green LED at the end of the sensor?

The green LED can be programmed for the following functions: alarming, aiming support, self-diagnostic, and temperature Code indication. The USB adapter cable and software are necessary for the configuration. The factory default setting for the LED is self-diagnostic.

What LED at the end of the sensor is always on?

In the self-diagnostic mode, if the LED is always on or always on with short breaks, the sensor indicates that it is unstable due to ambient temperature changes or is in an error mode.

What kind of power supply is required?

Use a separate, stabilized power supply with an output voltage of 5-30 V DC. The power supply’s residual ripple should be a maximum of 200 mV. Use shielded cables only for all power and data lines.

Do I need to ground the shielding of the CSmicro?

The shield (black) on the CSmicro is not connected to GND (brown). Connecting the shield to the ground or GND (whichever works best) is necessary. Please review the manual to review the drawings.

What is / shall be the output impedance for the CSmicro with mA and mV output?

The CSmicro 3M has a warm-up time. At a supply voltage (Vcc) ≥ 12 V, the sensor takes about 5 minutes to work in a stable mode. Therefore, the LED will show an alarm state for up to 5 minutes after switching on the unit.
